I remember a few years ago doing a Powerhoop presentation at a weight loss centre. I remember seeing a whole bunch of ladies lining up to get weighed. I looked into their faces and what I saw was a lot of nerves, sorrow, shame, some hope and lots of fear. A whole mix of emotions, but I remember thinking that this number on the scale would determine what kind of a day they would have. As they lined up, I couldn’t stop myself welling up. It could very possibly end in an internal beating up if the number wasn’t what was expected or hoped for.
The “food” that was being sold to them was overpriced and all packaged up. But this food represented to them hope, hope that THIS would be the answer to all their weight problems. All the years of Yo-Yo dieting, this was THE answer finally.
Hey, sure they would no doubt lose weight. You follow the diets and you will lose the weight. That’s so true. They would probably have bad days where they hated themselves just a little bit more. They would probably “fall off the wagon” and would have no clue how to get back on and just spend the day binging. Tomorrow is another day. In fact, Monday is better!!
I actually had a tear fall down my face that day I remember as I thought of how sad it felt to watch these beautiful women feeling so bad about themselves. You could see with their body language how much shame some of them held.
The big problem with ALL these so-called diets is this. The person is learning NOTHING about eating intuitively and naturally. They are learning nothing about how to listen to what their bodies actually NEED to eat. They are not learning anything other than how to count calories and points. They will finish the diet and go straight back into their old ways and the weight will just pile back on in super quick time. No healing has occurred. And the healing with themselves and food HAS to take place in order to establish and normalize eating and to transform the mindset of eating. You see, it is very common to use food when we are experiencing different emotions, stress, sadness, happiness, anxiety, boredom… The list goes on. We often eat to numb pain too. Or it can just be plain old bad habits. BUT nothing about these diets will cure this.
I too have been a victim of many diets. In fact, I ended up with an extreme eating disorder for many years of my young adult life. I had a distorted relationship with food from a really early age and my body too. Hey look, I believe it was all part of my journey. I am GLAD I had all that to go through because it led me to heal it a few years ago and now I can help heal others.
DIET’S DON’T WORK. 95% who diet will go onto putting it all back on.
I healed myself and for the past few years, I have never changed shape or size in the slightest. I don’t count calories, I eat what food my body NEEDS, I know how to listen to it and I respect it with all my heart. I truly nurture my body with food and trust me this is a far cry from my former days when I would fall off the wagon and spend hours binging on cakes, crisps, chocolate, and anything that was not going to support my health.
And that is exactly what I intend to do. I want to help to heal others who experience any kind of bad relationship with food and their bodies. I want to help people who don’t know how to eat for nurturing and wellbeing. I want to teach people how to find peace with their weight and themselves and by doing this they will become the weight they are meant to be with ease and flow. The mental struggle will be over once and for all. I have been studying some incredible material over the past few days and I have some big plans to take my learnings to those who need it.
